Life in the village of Pano Arodes
From a distance you can see that Pano Arodes is situated on a round hill and is very pretty with many trees interspersed amongst the buildings. The village spills out around the little church and down around the hillside, following tiny lanes and unsurfaced roads leading to the sea and the Avakas Gorge.
All the older houses are built of stone, many having been rebuilt after the earthquake in 1995 which measured 5.9 on the Richter scale and is still a subject of conversation in the coffee shop. There still remain several ruins of houses that were destroyed. The village boundaries have recently been extended to accommodate new housing which has brought new life and other nationalities to the village.
